FAQs About Prints & Paintings

I am honored to have you as a collector of my work and I thank you for appreciating my art.

What kind of paper (media) do you use for fine art photography?

We offer Archival Pigment Prints on photographic paper and 100% cotton paper.  Our fine art prints are produced in our studio and are inspected and hand signed by Deborah Sussex.  The print permanence ratings exceed 80 years when framed behind glass.

About Pastel Paintings

Pastel is a dry medium in a stick form, consisting of powdered pigments held together with a minimal amount of a binder (usually gum tragacanth).  One of the reasons pastel paintings and drawings are so beautifully unique is the quality of the pure color particles and how these catch and refract light.

The pastel medium is a pure pigment applied to a heavy paper or board which is often textured; ie. ‘sanded’.  Pigments used in making pastels are the same pigments that are ground for use in making oil and watercolor paints.  Painting with pastels, therefore, is as close as one can get to painting with pure pigment.

Traditionally used in the 18th century for painting royal portraiture, the soft pastel medium can trace its roots back to prehistoric cave paintings.  In and out of style in the last four centuries, pastels are now enjoying a modern-day resurgence of popularity, due to their intense colors, permanence, and tactile use by the artist.

What is a Archival Pigment Print?

Archival Pigment Prints; also known as “Giclée Prints”

Giclée (pronounced “zhee-clay”) reproductions were originally developed in 1984 as a digital method of fine art printing.  The word Giclée is French for “to spray on” or “to spray ink.”  This advanced method of creating museum quality art prints uses high-end ink jet printers and archival papers and inks.

To be truly considered a giclee, a print should:

  • Begin with a high quality digital file, either from professionally scanned film, digital capture or computer created art that has been color corrected and profiled for the intended output (printer in this case).
  • Be printed using state-of-the-art inkjet printers which have been calibrated in a closed-loop color management system.
  • Be printed with archival pigmented inks, specifically formulated for the substrate/media (paper, canvas etc).
  • Be printed by a technician/artist who understands color theory and imaging software and who has the experience and artistic talent to interpret and replicate an artistic vision.

How do I care for my investment?

  • Frame your artwork under glass using either Museum Glass or Conservation Clear glass.
  • Hang your artwork out of direct sun.
  • Do not store your artwork in a humid location.
  • Avoid storing/hanging artwork in an place with broad swing of temperature.
  • When cleaning artwork framed under glass, do not (non-ammonia) cleaner directly onto glass rather spray onto a microfiber cloth and wipe the glass in a circular motion.
